Introduction

Not Afraid is a project about hate speech against women. We know in Sri Lanka, “Hate speech” has been prevalent for many years that has had a profound effect on Sri Lankan society. This issue can be identified as a menace to democratic values, social stability, and peace. Therefore, hate speech against women has existed and has filtered down over the years also. The vulnerability of women belonging to minority groups did not start in the recent past, but it has a history of over a century. International Youth Alliance of Peace, we addressing hate speech under this project to preventing hate speech from escalating into something more dangerous and violent. Through this we will gather young leaders and educate them about hate speech against women and empowering them to combat hate speech against women. Social Media posters, polls, videos, YouTube series, Info graphs and blogs articles were completed under the Not afraid project to deliver the messages through the various platforms of social media in an effective way.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to create awareness among youth and to strengthen women minority groups to counter hate speech, misogyny, and discrimination against women. Following are the sub objectives of this project looking forward to achieving.

  • To apprehend the nature and scope of hate speech, misinformation and discrimination against women minority groups, generated in the Sri Lankan society.
  • To counter the hate speech, misogyny and discrimination against women minority groups by strengthening the protection of such groups and creating awareness among youth.
  • To create a platform to raise a voice on behalf of the women from minority groups, who suffer from hate speech, disinformation and discrimination.

Who Involved

This program was initiated by International Youth Alliance for Peace(IYAP). Therefore, this program was funded by the European Union and also Awareness with Human Action (AHA) and the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers are joining to this project as partners. This project was handled by Mr. Thirukumar Premakumar,the Founder President/ Executive Director of  International Youth Alliance for Peace(IYAP), Miss. Aafrin Yaseen, the Project Officer of International Youth Alliance for Peace, Mr. Mohommed Wazeer the graphic designer of International Youth Alliance for Peace  and Miss. Upekshika Ranatunga, Intern of International Youth Alliance for Peace  have contributed to the conduct the social media campaign effectively.
