Peace in Action

Introduction

The International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP) is a volunteer organization founded in November 2013 to bring together a network of Young People working together towards sustainable social development. IYAP is entirely led by volunteers, managed by a National Committee, and guided by an Advisory Committee. This Social Action Project called ” Peace in Action” was an outcome of the Active Citizens program, conducted in partnership with British Council Sri Lanka. Initially, Peace in Action started in the Moratuwa SERVE community center, and upon request by the Uda Maththala Vidyalaya. The Peace in Action at SERVE started on the 1st of July 2017, while the second part of the project at Uda Maththala Vidyalaya started on the 1st of August 2017.

Who Involved

University graduates joined in as volunteers of IYAP along with the Active Citizens team to deliver the lectures accordingly. The volunteers were trained on child policy, classroom management, and lesson plans which were made individually by each of the volunteers, and checked by the mentor teachers. Apart from the lesson plan conducted during the classes, there were other extra-curricular activities which were conducted in both the school and the institute.

Outcomes

At the end of the project, the success was clearly shown. In the SERVE center, 80% of the students went back to school. And in the Uda Maththala School, the Grade 11 students passed their O/L Examinations and passed English for the first time in the history of the school. A certificate of excellency is given to each volunteer after completing the project.
