After understanding the basic and reformed concepts of literacy, we need to tackle the question: why is literacy important? The main significance of literacy is being able to communicate with other people to perform transactions on a daily basis i.e. anything from monetary trade, social interaction and civic duties, and so on. Literacy has many layers. After understanding the basic and reformed concepts of literacy, we need to tackle the question: why is literacy important? The main significance of literacy is being able to communicate with other people to perform transactions on a daily basis i.e. anything from monetary trade, social interaction and civic duties, and so on. Literacy has many layers. It is important for personal, professional and social life. And the biggest significance of literacy is protection; protection from fraud, deception, and even adversity.
Generally, literacy refers to the ability to read and write in any language or form. Of late the definition of literacy has evolved and it now refers to the general umbrella of communicative, anthropological and linguistic abilities. Along with the standards of living, the basic standard of education and literacy has also changed over the last few decades (due to the massive influence of globalization). In order to understand what literacy truly signifies we ought to understand the concept of foundational literacy and their significance, as well as the types of literacy.
Literacy does not just give us the ability to read and write, but it also gives us the means to become independent. The ability to know, to understand and to be informed about concepts and everything going on in the world is the power of literacy. Education gives people perception and identity.
