Overview of the Program

Introduction:

Welcome to the Active Youth Program, an initiative driven by the International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP) to empower young individuals in Sri Lanka with the knowledge and skills necessary to actively participate in and strengthen democracy. With a focus on promoting inclusive decision-making, accountability, transparency, and anti-corruption efforts, this transformative program aims to create a society where the voices of youth are valued and contribute to positive change.

Introduction to Democracy, Governance, and Youth Participation:

Empowering the Future of Sri Lanka Democracy and governance are fundamental pillars of a thriving society, enabling citizens to actively participate in decision-making processes and shaping the course of their nation. In Sri Lanka, the importance of democracy and effective governance cannot be overstated, as they form the bedrock of a just and inclusive society. Recognizing this significance, the International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP), as a youth organization committed to fostering positive change, has taken the initiative to empower young people through its Active Youth Program.

The Need for Empowering Young People in Sri Lanka:

Statistics and facts indicate the critical role that youth play in shaping the future of Sri Lanka. With approximately 26% of the population aged between 15 and 29 years old, young people represent a significant demographic group that possesses immense potential to drive social, political, and economic progress. However, to harness this potential effectively, it is crucial to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary for active engagement in democratic processes. In Sri Lanka, challenges such as limited awareness of democratic principles, governance issues, and corruption persist. To address these challenges and create positive change, there is an urgent need to provide comprehensive training and education on democracy, governance, and youth participation. It is through this lens that IYAP has designed the Active Youth Program, aimed at empowering young individuals and nurturing their capacity to contribute effectively to the consolidation and strengthening of democracy.

Why the International Youth Alliance is Taking Action:

At IYAP, we firmly believe in the power of youth to shape the future. Sri Lanka’s vibrant and sizable young population represents immense potential for progress, but they need the right tools and knowledge to drive meaningful change. Unfortunately, challenges such as limited awareness of democratic principles, governance issues, and corruption persist. To address these challenges head-on, we have taken the initiative to empower young people through the Active Youth Program. By equipping them with the necessary skills and understanding, we aim to nurture their capacity to contribute effectively to the consolidation and strengthening of democracy in Sri Lanka.

The Success of Phase 1:

In the previous phase of the program, we witnessed remarkable success. With a cohort of 56 enthusiastic participants, the online certificate program provided a comprehensive understanding of democracy, governance, transparency, and anti-corruption laws in the Sri Lankan context. The program facilitated engaging panel discussions and roundtable sessions, including insights from a representative of the State Department Office. Furthermore, participants took part in groundbreaking research, resulting in 18 abstracts and 7 final research papers. These achievements not only showcased participants’ knowledge but also contributed to the body of research on democratic governance in Sri Lanka.
